Showcase website or online store: which type of website fits your business?

Want to build a website but unsure which format to choose? Here's how to decide between a showcase website, a landing page and an online store based on your real goals.

The question to ask first: what should your website actually do?

Before talking about design or budget, you need to clarify the website's main goal. Should it present your business and generate contact requests? Sell products directly online? Convert visitors coming from an ad for one specific offer? These three goals correspond to three different formats — a showcase website, an online store and a landing page — and confusing these needs is the main reason websites fail to deliver the expected results.

The showcase website: presenting your business and generating leads

This is the best fit for the vast majority of tradespeople, freelancers, service businesses and small companies. A showcase website presents your business, your work, your service area and your contact details, with a clearly visible contact form or phone number. The goal isn't to sell online, but to reassure a visitor and turn them into a lead who reaches out to you. It's also the fastest and most affordable format to set up.

The online store: selling directly online

If your business involves selling physical or digital products directly to customers, without a prior conversation, an online store is necessary: product catalog, cart, online payment, order and inventory management. This is a bigger project than a showcase website, both in initial development and in ongoing maintenance (catalog updates, payment security, logistics management). It's only worth committing to if online sales are genuinely at the core of your business model.

The landing page: converting on a specific offer

A landing page is a single page focused on one goal: getting a form filled out, a call booked, a document downloaded. It's particularly effective alongside an advertising campaign (Google Ads, social media) or for launching a specific offer. Unlike a showcase website, it doesn't try to present everything — it guides the visitor toward a single action, with no distractions.

How we help you decide

In most of the projects we run, a well-built showcase website — possibly paired with a dedicated landing page for a flagship offer — is more than enough to generate real leads, for a reasonable investment starting at €250. We only recommend an online store when direct online sales are an operational reality of your business, not a feature added just in case. The right choice always depends on your business model, not on trends.
